Our Legacy: Rooted in Vision and Purpose

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, was founded on January 16, 1920, at Howard University by five extraordinary women: Arizona Cleaver Stemons, Pearl Anna Neal, Myrtle Tyler Faithful, Viola Tyler Goings, and Fannie Pettie Watts—our beloved Five Pearls. These women redefined what sorority life could be by creating an organization grounded in Service, Scholarship, Sisterly Love, and Finer Womanhood, rather than social elitism.

In partnership with members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta became the first sorority to be constitutionally bound to a fraternity—establishing a lasting legacy of unity and collaboration. Since its inception, Zeta has expanded internationally, remaining deeply committed to addressing the most urgent needs of marginalized communities.

The Start of Upsilon Omega Zeta

On December 21, 2006, five action-oriented and purpose-driven women—Kier Colon, Tiffani Hunter, Kimber Monford-Hall, Shavon Pritchett, and Karen Raine—chartered the Upsilon Omega Zeta Chapter in Fishers, Indiana. Our charter members recognized a gap in charitable services in suburban and rural communities in central Indiana that were often overlooked. While the city of Indianapolis had longstanding Zeta chapters, the surrounding areas faced silent but critical needs—particularly among working families one paycheck away from hardship.

Our reputation—UNIQUELY OUTSTANDING

The vision of our five charter members proved vital. When the 2008 financial crisis devastated the U.S. economy, suburban and rural families were among the hardest hit—losing jobs, homes, and savings. As basic needs like food, housing, and clothing grew more urgent, Upsilon Omega Zeta rose to the challenge, stepping up to provide hands-on service and resource coordination to fill the gap.

Fueled by compassion, consistency, and a tireless commitment to Zeta’s principles, the chapter has built a legacy of award-winning service within the Fishers and Greater Indianapolis area. Our commitment to community impact, organizational growth, and needs-based programming, coupled with our diverse and compassionate membership has established our collective identity as Uniquely Outstanding!
